HEMORRHOIDS or PILES,
colloquially HAEMORRHOIDS
from Gk. haimorrhoides, pl. of haimorrhois,
from haima ("blood") + rhoos ("a stream, a flowing")
A group of dilated or swollen blood vessels in the anal canal and lower rectum. Enlargement of the hemorrhoid vessels are usually caused by our natural body posture, standing erect, pregnancy, heredity and straining. Hemorrhoids are common in the United States and other westernised nations. Just about everyone has hemorrhoids at some time. They are very common in both men and women and are found in about half of the population by age 50.
There are 3 types of hemorrhoids:
external, internal and pregnancy.

- What are the symptoms of external hemorrhoids?
The Symptoms can include an itching and burning sensation accompanied by bleeding. External hemorrhoids can also progress to a condition called thrombosed external hemorrhoid. The symptoms for this condition include a very painful blood clot which causes swelling around the anus region.
- How do internal hemorrhoids differ from external hemorrhoids?
Internal hemorrhoids are usually much less painful because of their location. If your stool is bright red with blood or you see signs of blood in the toilet bowl after a bowl movement, then there is a good chance that you have internal hemorrhoids. They can also become quite painful if the internal hemorrhoid protrudes through the anus. This condition is also referred to as a protruding hemorrhoid.
- How about pregnancy hemorrhoids?
A hemorrhoid is actually a form of a varicose vein. The veins in and around the rectum become swollen. During pregnancy, your body has more blood circulating through your veins. All your veins, especially those below your uterus, become dilated. Hemorrhoids are a common problem for pregnant women, with up to 50% of women suffering through them.
- What other conditions may feel like hemorrhoids?
Sometimes a small split or crack occurs in the skin near the anus (anal fissure), often caused by large, hard bowel movements. People also suffer from moderate or severe itching in and around the anus (pruritus ani) that is not caused by hemorrhoids but may be due to heat and tight-fitting clothing, improper hygiene, soaps and detergents and stress.
Unfortunately, because most people don't want to discuss this very common problem, they go through life experiencing the symptoms of hemorrhoids. Treating them at the first sign of discomfort provides relief of hemorrhoidal symptoms before they become more severe, so you can go about your normal activities without any interruption.
